VIDEO CONTEST ON INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE

What is the video contest about?

In partnership with the Parent Fund, the Office for Inclusive Excellence is launching a video contest aimed at supporting a stronger campus climate grounded in inclusive excellence. Inclusive excellence may be characterized by (but is not limited to) issues of access and equity, where differences are valued and not simply tolerated. Making excellence inclusive for all students within an institution entails a respect for intersecting identities—race & ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status, disabilities, socioeconomic class, non-traditional, religion, and national origin & citizenship—as evidenced by diversity, inclusion, intersectionality, pluralistic conceptualizations, belonging, and resilience (despite being the ‘only’ one).

This video contest is designed to allow students to portray a wide array of perspectives on inclusive excellence and inclusive climates. These perspectives may take vast forms of representations and genres. For example, a video could encompass animation(s), comedy, a call to action, a challenge to community members, spoken word poetry, narratives, interviews, personal reflections with images, testimonios, (her)stories, etc. We encourage participants to be creative! The video could raise awareness on the benefits of difference, including complex ways of knowing, being, and doing that contribute to our campus community and/or larger societal practices. Importantly, we ask that participants be cognizant of the theme of inclusion within an environment centering mutual respect.

Who is eligible?

The video contest is open to all University of Utah students enrolled in at least one (for-credit) course. The Selection Committee will evaluate entries based on originality, creativity, and relevance to the themes of inclusive excellence and its relationship to student success. Additionally, videos will be judged on overall quality, including strength of the message/story presented, videography and editing, musical accompaniment (if any), and special effects (if any).

How must the video be formatted?

All videos must be no longer than five-minutes. Participants should follow these instructions:

  • Save your video in .mpeg, .mov, .mp4 or .avi (There are computer labs in the Marriott Library.)
  • You can choose to burn your video to CD/DVD. Please label CD/DVD with your name, phone, and email. Use a permanent marker. Deliver the CD/DVD and deliver it to our office in the Union Building, Room 270, by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016.
