Novel parallel data processing in the latest Tableau system
Abstract:
To make beautiful, easy to use, and fast software is hard and provides
deep technical challenges. This talk demonstrates what Tableau
provides, some of the tough problems we have solved, and how we
improved performance in our 9.0 product through parallel query
operations and dependency analysis. Our research and development teams
regularly present at academic conferences such as SIGMOD, VLDB,
SIGCHI, SIGGRAPH, et cetera; this talk was adapted from the SIGMOD
2015 paper.
Speaker Bio:
Dana Groff is Tableau’s Platform Data manager which means that he
manages all development from the abstract query through the physical
query in Tableau. This includes query optimization, the internal
columnar data base system, all connectivity to outside databases, and
the machine learning efforts we use to discover and clean data. He is
an industry veteran who prior to Tableau helped develop parallel
programming libraries for C++ at Microsoft, and also while there put
transactions in the OS kernel, file system, and in language (software
transactional memory). He has worked for Sybase (now SAP), IBM,
Filetek (now SGI) and DEC (now HP and Oracle) developing OLTP and
relational database systems.
Background of Tableau:
Tableau (NYSE: DATA) is on a mission to help our customers see and
understand their data. We are the leader in business intelligence and
analytics platforms, according to Gartner three years in a row. We are
freakishly-friendly, cool place to work and keep being voted one of
the best places to work in Washington state.
