Answer

The answers we give below might not be very convincing because the example program is so small. It might help to imagine a large one.

• We wouldn't have to memorize (or even know) the formula for computing base two logarithms.
• We wouldn't have to duplicate the formula for base two logarithms every time we needed to compute one. It appears three times in the example program, which is probably tolerable. But what if it appeared dozens or even hundreds of times? Every time it appears is another opportunity for making a typographical mistake.
