chenwei-guo300x200The faculty, staff and administration of the University of Utah’s College of Engineering would like to offer its sincerest condolences after the tragic death of ChenWei Guo (pictured), a College of Engineering student in computer science who was fatally shot Monday, Oct. 30, in a carjacking attempt near campus.

Born in Beijing, China, ChenWei came to the U.S. in 2012 and was dreaming to one day have his own consulting company. He enjoyed skydiving, skiing, horseback riding, dancing and modern fashion. He arrived at the U this year and was a promising student who also worked as a peer advisor in the U’s International Student and Scholar Services Office.

On behalf of the entire College of Engineering family, we want to express our sincerest and personal condolences to ChenWei’s family, friends and fellow students across the campus who knew him well. His death is a loss to the college, the campus and the community.

The College of Engineering is dedicated to developing our students’ potential for the benefit of humanity. ChenWei aspired to a career that was focused on making life better. We are deeply saddened by his loss and unnerved by the violence that took his life so unexpectedly. As part of the university, we make every effort to provide our students with a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment. An experience like this affects us all at the deepest level.

We encourage you to take advantage of the various counseling services available through the Counseling Center or Employee Assistance Program where the staff are prepared to provide the needed support: http://counselingcenter.utah.edu/.  The Counseling Center has a multi-faceted response to support our community. As a part of this, the Mindfulness Center in the Counseling Center is open for drop-in support for students all week from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will take time to recover and process these tragic events.
