Did you download the .gz files using Netscape? It's not unusual for
Netscape to download a file, detect that it's compressed, and
automatically uncompress it for you, but leave the filename
unchanged.
I don't know exactly why this happens. I think it's an unfortunate
side effect of netscape wanting to automatically display .ps.gz files
with Ghostscript or whatever.
