Question regarding match function

I have a question regarding the match function in DemultiplexKey.
The match method is currently public, but there is a note in the
code that says that it should not be public.  

My question is if this method is not public, how will AA developers
define a match function.  Lets say the match function is simply 
a collection of fixed fields.   I suppose we could have design
a demux key that handles multiple slices.   Do you think that would
be the correct approach?  What would we do if headers had variable 
length?
